What is a gold IRA?
A gold IRA generally refers to a self-directed individual retirement account that holds eligible physical precious metals. Not every gold coin or bar qualifies, and custody requirements matter.

Understand the trade-offs
Physical metals can fluctuate in value and may involve dealer markups, custody, storage and selling costs. An IRA structure does not remove investment risk.

Start with the account, not a sales pitch
A gold IRA is typically a self-directed IRA that holds eligible precious metals. The IRA's tax treatment depends on whether it is traditional or Roth, while the metal introduces its own price, custody and resale risks. Our gold IRA guide explains these separate decisions.
If you already have a retirement plan, moving money is another decision. A rollover is not automatically necessary just because you want to research gold. Start by understanding the existing account's features and any distribution restrictions.
Understand the real purchase price
The price of physical metal is not just the quoted spot price. Dealer premiums, account administration, storage, insurance and eventual resale spreads can all affect your result. Our fees guide shows how to request comparable written quotes.
The risks guide addresses price declines, concentration, liquidity and fraud. An IRA does not guarantee the value of its holdings, and a legitimate custodian does not necessarily vet a dealer's investment claims.
How we handle merchant information
We link to Noble Gold's Wealth Kit as an affiliate and may receive compensation. We are not Noble Gold, have not tested its service firsthand, and do not treat merchant advertising as independent evidence. Read our Noble Gold research checklist before requesting information.
If you decide to request the kit, review the merchant's contact and privacy terms. A free educational kit is not an endorsement of an account, a metal purchase or a retirement rollover.
