Check whether funds are eligible

A former employer’s plan may permit an eligible rollover, but current-employer plans can restrict distributions. Ask the plan administrator about eligibility and the receiving custodian about acceptance.

Prefer understanding the payment route

In a direct rollover the plan pays the receiving IRA or plan rather than you. If funds are paid to you, withholding and the 60-day deadline can complicate a full rollover.

Avoid an unnecessary tax event

Do not liquidate or request a distribution solely on a salesperson’s instruction. Confirm account type, paperwork, timing and tax consequences with your administrator and adviser.

Check whether your 401(k) money is eligible to move

A former employer's plan may offer different distribution options from a plan at your current employer. Some current-employer plans allow certain in-service withdrawals, while others do not. Ask the plan administrator for the summary plan description and your available rollover options.

Before initiating anything, determine whether the balance includes pre-tax, designated Roth, after-tax or employer-stock components. Different components may need different destinations and tax treatment.

Use a documented movement of funds

A direct rollover generally sends eligible funds from the plan to the receiving IRA without paying them to you. Ask the plan and receiving custodian for exact payee instructions and confirmation of the transaction. Indirect rollovers can introduce withholding and timing risks.

Do not send retirement money directly to a metals salesperson on the assumption that a dealer is your custodian. Establish the receiving account and verify the custodian's instructions independently.

Assess what you would give up

Compare the current plan's fees, investment options, creditor protections, service and distribution rules with those of the proposed IRA. Some plans offer low-cost diversified funds or features that an IRA cannot duplicate.

A rollover is a separate decision from buying gold. You can evaluate whether moving the account makes sense without committing to a particular metal or dealer at the same time.

Questions to take into your research

  • Can I get the exact terms and all fees in writing?
  • What could cause a loss or an unexpected tax bill?
  • How would I exit this position if I needed cash?

Questions for the plan administrator

Ask whether your plan permits a distribution now, whether a direct rollover is available, what forms and processing times apply, and whether any loan balance or other plan feature affects the transaction.

Request the receiving custodian's instructions directly from that institution. Do not rely solely on a dealer forwarding account numbers or wire details.

Common question

Can I roll over an active employer's plan?

Possibly, but availability depends on plan rules and your circumstances. Ask the administrator about in-service distributions and do not assume the option exists.
