Before paying

Check the seller’s identity, item specifications, weight, purity, total price, delivery terms and refund policy. Avoid pressure to act before receiving documents.

After delivery

Keep invoices and authentication records, and decide whether professional vault storage or another lawful arrangement fits your insurance and access needs.

Do not confuse personal storage with IRA custody

IRS rules for qualifying IRA bullion differ from ordinary personally owned gold. Consult the IRA custodian before any movement of retirement-account metal.

Purchase with a verifiable paper trail

Record the dealer's legal identity, product description, weight, purity, total invoice, payment method and delivery terms. Confirm the exact item being purchased rather than relying on a photograph or generic description.

Avoid pressure to wire funds immediately or to buy a more expensive collectible as a substitute for the bullion you requested. Compare independent quotes.

Choose storage based on realistic risks

Home storage provides access but raises theft, loss and insurance questions. A commercial vault may offer specialized security but creates recurring fees, access rules and counterparty dependence. Neither option eliminates price risk.

Review insurance coverage, exclusions, inventory procedures and who can retrieve the metal. Keep records and instructions for trusted beneficiaries without publishing sensitive storage details.

Plan verification and resale

Check the delivered product against the invoice and retain authenticity documentation. Before selling, obtain competing bids and understand authentication, shipping, settlement and potential tax reporting.

If the gold is held by an IRA, follow the custodian's procedures rather than taking personal delivery without tax advice.

Questions to take into your research

  • Can I get the exact terms and all fees in writing?
  • What could cause a loss or an unexpected tax bill?
  • How would I exit this position if I needed cash?

A storage decision checklist

For home storage, check whether your existing insurance covers bullion and under what limits. For a vault, request the agreement covering access, inventory, insurance and termination. Avoid relying on verbal assurances.

Consider who can locate the records if you become incapacitated. Keep purchase and storage documents accessible to an appropriate trusted person without disclosing security details publicly.

Common question

Does homeowners insurance automatically cover bullion?

Do not assume so. Policies may exclude or limit precious metals, and a vault's policy may also have exclusions. Obtain coverage terms in writing.
