Broader investment choice
A self-directed IRA is an IRA with a custodian permitting investments beyond the usual brokerage menu. Allowed assets depend on tax rules and the custodian’s policies.
Custody is not endorsement
The SEC warns that a self-directed IRA custodian’s administrative role does not mean it has vetted an investment or its promoter. Independently check sellers and written disclosures.
Understand the operating burden
Alternative assets can add valuation uncertainty, higher fees, liquidity constraints and prohibited-transaction concerns. Seek qualified tax advice before purchasing.

What self-directed really means
A self-directed IRA is an IRA administered by a custodian that permits a broader range of investments than many conventional brokerage IRAs. Possible assets include precious metals and other alternatives, subject to applicable rules and the custodian's policies.
Self-direction does not mean you can ignore IRA rules or personally control IRA assets as though they were outside a retirement account.
Custodians administer; they may not vet
Investor.gov warns that self-directed IRA custodians generally do not evaluate the quality, legitimacy or financial information of investments. The account holder must independently assess the investment and the people promoting it.
Check the custodian's identity and regulatory status, review the account agreement and obtain an independent assessment of any complex investment. A familiar custodian name is not proof that a specific deal is safe.
Avoid prohibited transactions and complexity
Transactions involving disqualified persons, personal use of IRA assets and certain arrangements can create significant tax problems. Precious metals also involve collectible rules and physical-possession requirements.
Consult a qualified tax adviser before entering unusual storage or financing arrangements. Compare the administrative burden and fees with a simpler retirement account.
Questions to take into your research
- Can I get the exact terms and all fees in writing?
- What could cause a loss or an unexpected tax bill?
- How would I exit this position if I needed cash?
The verification sequence
Confirm the custodian's identity using independent contact details, read its agreement, and separately verify the dealer and storage company. Ask who receives money and who has authority to instruct a purchase or distribution.
The SEC's investor alert explains why an account statement may not reflect a realizable sale value for an alternative asset. If valuation is uncertain, request independent evidence before treating the displayed number as cash-equivalent.
Common question
Does self-directed mean tax-free?
No. Traditional and Roth tax rules still apply, and prohibited transactions or ineligible investments can create tax problems. The broader investment menu is not a new tax exemption.
